GAÏA GAUTIER CAPUÇON, NOUVEAU CD. HANS NEFKENS FOUNDATION: MUSEO REINA SOFÍA

7 Noviembre 2025

Gautier Capuçon’s cello becomes the voice of the Earth in an inspired album of world premiere recordings: Gaïa.

Uniting seventeen original contributions by sixteen contemporary composers, this project sets out to explore humanity’s relationship to nature.

Through a multifaceted lens, drawing from different musical genres, aesthetics, and cultural influences as well as the formidable contrasts of the natural world.

“Each track gives its own voice to the cello, immersing us in the power and depth of nature and the Earth, the source of life,” Gautier explains. “In each piece, it is the Earth that expresses itself in music: sometimes fragile, sometimes majestic, always essential. … This album is also a song of warning, a hymn to this threatened beauty, a prayer for future generations.”

The Han Nefkens Foundation is delighted to announce a new Moving Image Commission, uniting the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid (Spain) with the Singapore Art Museum (Singapore) and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (USA) in the commissioning of a new moving image artwork to the value of $100,000.

Han Nefkens, Founder, Han Nefkens Foundation: “I’m thrilled that after years of fruitful collaboration with art institutions in my hometown Barcelona we will now also collaborate with a prestigious museum in Madrid. I look forward to facilitating the dialogue among these three museums and I’m confident that the outcome will be enriching for all those involved, including, of course, the chosen artist”.

This new Commission joins the two existing Moving Image Commissions and four existing Han Nefkens Foundation Video Art Production Grants. Together, over 35 art museums and institutions across three continents are currently actively involved in enabling artists working in the field of moving image to create, exhibit and be recognised. A further, fourth co-commission will be announced soon.

Being selected to participate in a Han Nefkens Foundation Grant or Co-Commission is a career changing moment for any artist. As a result of the freedom and visibility that it gives them, many of the selected artists have gone on to have highly successful careers, exhibiting in leading institutions and garnering critical success across the world.

In all cases the participating institutions are the Jury for each selection and Han Nefkens himself has no voice. The Foundation does not collect any edition of the newly produced artworks: it exists solely to create professional connections between the institutions and to connect people through art, across the world.

The initial recipient of this inaugural co-commission will be announced by the end of 2025.
