KIMONO STYLE: THE JOHN C. WEBER COLLECTION

This exhibition will trace the transformation of the kimono from the late Edo period (1615–1868) through the early 20th century, as the T-shaped garment was adapted to suit the lifestyle of modern Japanese women. It will feature a remarkable selection of works from the renowned John C. Weber Collection of Japanese art that explore the mutual artistic exchanges between the kimono and Western fashion, as well as highlights from The Costume Institute’s collection.

The weaving, dyeing, and embroidery techniques for which Japan is famed reached their peak of artistic sophistication during the Edo period. Members of the ruling military class were the primary consumers of sumptuous kimono, each one being custom-made. At the same time, a dynamic urban culture emerged, and the merchant class used its wealth to acquire material luxuries. Kimono, one of the most visible art forms, provided a way for the townspeople to proclaim their aesthetic sensibility. Depictions of kimono in Japanese woodblock prints were widely studied by Western couturiers in the late 19th century. The garment’s comparatively loose, enveloping silhouette, and its rectilinear cut would have the most profound and lasting influence on Western fashion, with couturiers like Madeleine Vionnet and Cristóbal Balenciaga taking inspiration from the kimono for their avant-garde creations.

In the Meiji period (1868–1912), Western clothing was introduced to Japan. Simultaneously, modernization and social changes enabled more women to gain access to silk kimonos than ever before. Around the 1920s, affordable ready-to-wear kimono (meisen) became very popular and reflected a more Westernized lifestyle. These were sold in department stores modelled on Western retailers, following Western-style marketing strategies. To illustrate these connections, the exhibition will present over 60 kimonos alongside Western garments, paintings, prints, and decorative art objects.

BELLINI INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT, OLTRE 30 INIZIATIVE IN SCENA A CATANIA

Oltre 30 appuntamenti tra opere, concerti, prosa, danza, cinema, incontri culturali, con in scena grandi interpreti della lirica mondiale. E uno spettacolo clou: ‘I Capuleti e i Montecchi’ al Teatro Massimo ‘Vincenzo Bellini‘, il 23 settembre, che sarà trasmesso in diretta su Rai5.

E’ il cartellone del ‘Bellini international context’ (Bic), che, dopo l’anteprima del 16 luglio al Teatro Antico di Taormina, si svolgerà dal 1 settembre al 2 ottobre a Catania, nei siti storici della città natale del compositore, promosso dalla Regione Siciliana presentato a Catania dall’assessore al Turismo, Manlio Messina.

La direzione artistica è del direttore d’orchestra Fabrizio Maria Carminati, mentre project manager del festival è la sua collega Gianna Fratta. “Il Bic rientra tra i grandi eventi che qualificano e al tempo stesso incrementano l’immagine del territorio e mobilitano i flussi turistici – afferma Messina – un progetto direttamente promosso dalla Regione che, insieme ai Comuni di Catania e Taormina vede unite sinergicamente l’arcidiocesi etnea, le maggiori istituzioni liriche regionali, il mondo accademico, i conservatori. Siamo orgogliosi di avere centrato un ‘obiettivo che ha dato e darà lustro alla Sicilia, contribuendo a rimarcarne la centralità nel cuore del Mediterraneo. Questi i traguardi raggiunti da un festival che lasciamo in eredità a coloro che verranno dopo di noi, fiduciosi che vorranno confermarlo e potenziarlo, perché la cultura e il benessere del territorio sono valori che ogni amministrazione deve considerare prioritari”.

Carminati sottolinea che “un festival si costruisce nel tempo” e noi “stiamo sviluppando un progetto che ha già mostrato il proprio ampio respiro. L’idea è allestire ogni anno un titolo del decalogo operistico belliniano, un ciclo appunto decennale, sviluppando variazioni sul tema, approfondendo l’aspetto filologico, storico, biografico, ma con grande apertura all’innovazione, alla contaminazione, in una parola alla creatività”.

Per Gianna Fratta “il Bic è un vero e proprio ‘contesto’ culturale, in cui si sviluppa un’idea nuova di spettacolo dal vivo e di rassegna basata sull’interazione dei linguaggi dell’arte”.

Atlàntida Film Fest nació hace 12 años como el primer festival de cine online en nuestro país y lo hizo con una misión: dar a conocer al público las mejores películas internacionales que no encontraban lugar en las salas. FÜSSLI, ENTRE RÊVE ET FANTASTIQUE. MUSÉE JACQUEMART-ANDRÉ INSTITUT DE FRANCE | PARIS

écouvrez à l’automne 2022 l’œuvre du peintre britannique d’origine suisse, Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825). À travers une soixantaine d’œuvres issues de collections publiques et privées, parcourez les thèmes les plus emblématiques de l’œuvre de Füssli, artiste de l’imaginaire et du sublime. Des sujets shakespeariens aux représentations du rêve, du cauchemar et des apparitions, en passant par les illustrations mythologiques et bibliques, Füssli développe une nouvelle esthétique qui oscille entre rêve et fantastique.

Fils d’un père peintre et historien de l’art, Johann Heinrich Füssli fut un temps pasteur et commença une carrière artistique assez tardivement, lors d’un premier voyage à Londres, sous l’influence de Sir Joshua Reynolds, président de la Royal Academy. Après un long séjour en Italie, au cours duquel il est fasciné notamment par la puissance des compositions de Michel-Ange, il revient s’installer à Londres à la fin des années 1770. Artiste atypique et intellectuel, Füssli puise son inspiration dans les sources littéraires qu’il passe au filtre de son imagination. Il développe dans sa peinture un langage onirique et dramatique, où se côtoient sans cesse le merveilleux et le fantastique, le sublime et le grotesque

Venez explorer l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Füssli à laquelle aucune exposition monographique n’avait été consacrée à Paris depuis 1975 : de la représentation du théâtre shakespearien, en particulier de Macbeth, aux récits mythologiques et bibliques et à la figure féminine dans son œuvre graphique et pour finir les thèmes du cauchemar, véritable création füsslienne, puis du rêve et des apparitions.

Füssli développe une veine fantastique relativement marginale pour l’époque car elle contourne les règles académiques. C’est en 1782 qu’il présente sa première version du Cauchemar, œuvre emblématique de son imaginaire qui assoit véritablement sa carrière de peintre. Élu membre associéde la Royal Academy en 1788, puis académicien en 1790, Füssli, tout en travaillant de manière sérielle, incarne une recherche du sublime qui s’impose à l’Angleterre de son époque.

A TRIBUTE TO PAULINE VIARDOT - MARINA VIOTTI, LES TALENS LYRIQUES, CHRISTOPHE ROUSSET

L'album en hommage à la cantatrice Pauline Viardot par Les Talens Lyriques / Christophe Rousset et la mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti

Christophe Rousset et Les Talens Lyriques rendent hommage à la cantatrice la plus marquante du XIXe siècle : Pauline Viardot. Diva aux multiples talents, Pauline Viardot fut à la fois chanteuse lyrique, compositrice, muse et grande ambassadrice de la musique romantique française. Une artiste complète qui, au cours de sa longue existence (1821-1910), « s’est faite l’interprète des grands compositeurs du passé mais aussi de ses contemporains dont elle a su, avec un « flair » qui lui était propre, détecter le talent et promouvoir les premiers chefs-d’œuvre. Formée à l’école de Rossini, Bellini ou Donizetti, elle a défendu les opéras de Meyerbeer ou Halévy, recréé l’Orphée de Gluck et révélé maintes pages de ses amis Berlioz, Massenet, Gounod ou Fauré. » (Patrick Barbier, auteur de Pauline Viardot, Grasset, 2009).

Sublimés par la voix de la mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti, les airs les plus célèbres tirés de certains grands rôles de Pauline Viardot se côtoient dans cet enregistrement, comme l’Air de Sapho de Gounod, « Una voce poco fa.. » d*’Il barbiere di Siviglia* de Gioachino Rossini, ou encore l’Air de Marie-Magdeleine « Ô mes sœurs » de Jules Massenet.

L’album met en avant une sélection d’œuvres dans des répertoires italiens et français très différents, comme le souligne le chef et fondateur des Talens Lyriques Christophe Rousset. « Le répertoire français est beaucoup plus sur une intériorité, une expressivité […]. Les Italiens comme Donizetti ou Bellini donnent beaucoup plus de virtuosité. […] », explique-t-il. Il se dit également « ravi de voir combien Les Talens Lyriques peuvent passer d’un opéra de Lully à du Donizetti, très orchestré, avec autant d’aisance. » Invitée par Christophe Rousset pour son premier grand enregistrement en solo, Marina Viotti a été séduite par ce programme éclectique aux « grands écarts tant vocaux qu’artistiques ».

OPERA DE MONTREAL .YOURCENAR - UNE ÎLE DE PASSIONS ÉRIC CHAMPAGNE | HÉLÈNE DORION & MARIE-CLAIRE BLAIS

Inspired by the life and work of Marguerite Yourcenar, this Quebec creation by librettist Hélène Dorion and the late Marie-Claire Blais is set to music by composer Éric Champagne. Focused mainly on her relationships with Grace Frick and Jerry Wilson, the opera highlights the tensions that shaped Marguerite Yourcenar’s life as a woman, companion, and writer.

Marguerite Yourcenar was a novelist who strongly impacted the literary world of the 20th century. Torn between the discipline which writing demanded and her thirst for freedom, between the stability of emotional balance and her own passionate nature, she gathered implacable strength out of these dualities, enabling her to break with the social conventions of her time.

N.B. This opera will first be presented in July 2022 during the Festival d'opéra de Québec.

LOVE SONGS PHOTOGRAPHY AND INTIMACY

The collective exhibition Love Songs proposes a completely new vision of the history of photography through the prism of intimate relationships between lovers.

Because of the themes presented in the exhibition, some photographs displayed in Love Songs can hurt the sensibilities of the visitors, especially the youngest.

Bringing together 14 series by some of the most important photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibition comprises both masterpieces from the MEP collection, and loaned works by important contemporary artists, many of which are exhibited for the first time in Europe. It shows both the importance of this subject to artists working now, as well as its rich history.

At the core of the exhibition, Nobuyoshi Araki and Nan Goldin’s ensembles are the starting point of this new vision of photography. The work of these two photographers is compared with series by other great names, such as René Groebli, Emmet Gowin, Larry Clark, Sally Mann, Leigh Ledare, Hervé Guibert or Alix Cléo Roubaud, as well as from contemporary artists as JH Engström & Margot Wallard, RongRong&inri, Lin Zhipeng (aka No 223), Hideka Tonomura or Collier Schorr.

Taking inspiration from Goldin’s ‘Ballad…’ Love Songs is conceived and organised like a musical compilation offered to a lover, with Side A, the first half of the show, made up of series from 1950-1980/90 and Side B, the second half, 1980/90 to now…

Taking us through many different stories and scenarios photographed between different couples, from the first days of an affair, through marriages, honeymoons, domestic bliss and the pain of separation, even to the last days shared between loves, the intimacies shared on film are revealed in all their poetry and honesty.
