About The British Isles 2007 – 2020

So, The British Isles, 2007 – 2020 contains a number of portraits and landscapes taken over thirteen years. Hawkesworth didn’t have an agenda other than wondering from place to place. Thus, he recorded his roaming as he travelled around town centres, residential suburbs, isolated villages and remote islands.

The book is beautifully presented as a celebration of the United Kingdom and its inhabitants. Through Hawkesworth’s lens we see commuting professionals, children, priests, shop workers, market shoppers and all the diverse faces that make up the British population.

Though the exploration of people and places, the photographer achieves an understanding of a very eventful period in British history, full of conflict, deep political shifts and the reframing of ‘Britishness’ as an identity.

About Jamie Hawkesworth

UNIQUE MIKIS THEODORAKIS, COMPOSER OF ZORBA THE GREEK, DIES AGED 96. (ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MUSICIANS, EVER)

 I SAW HIM IN CONCERT IN BUENOS AIRES, MADRID AND ATHENS, MANY MANY CENTURIES AGO... Alicia Perris

Mikis Theodorakis, the celebrated composer best known for the music from the 1964 film Zorba the Greek, has died in Athens aged 96.

Theodorakis was in the resistance to the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War Two and later served as an MP.

He was also a leading figure opposing military rule in Greece from 1967-1974.

Zorba the Greek told the story of an English writer in Crete whose life is transformed when he meets Alexis Zorba, a gregarious peasant.

The scene when Zorba dances barefoot on the beach became a popular image of Greek culture. The theme from the film, which won three Oscars, remains probably the most famous piece of Greek music more than half a century later.

"Today we lost a part of the soul of Greece," Culture Minister Lina Mendoni wrote on Twitter, calling him "the one who made all Greeks sing poetry".

Theodorakis also wrote the film music for Serpico (1973) and a song cycle called the Mauthausen Trilogy, with lyrics based on poems of a concentration camp survivor.

The song Antonis from that work became popular with Afghans. It was sung by the residents of Kabul in 2001 who greeted troops of the Northern Alliance as they entered the city and expelled the Taliban.

The same song was the theme of the 1969 film Z, whose soundtrack won a Bafta Award for Best Film Music in 1970. The film, directed by Costa-Gavras, is a thinly fictionalised account of the assassination of a left-wing Greek politician.

Theodorakis himself was for much of his life a leftist and at times a communist. In 1947, during the civil war that followed World War Two, he was arrested and tortured.

The BBC's Kostas Kallergis says Theodorakis expressed the will to fight against fascism and the sense of liberty Greeks felt after the fall of the military junta in 1974.

Theodorakis's songs were always deeply political. He was repeatedly jailed for his beliefs and was sent into exile within Greece.

He remained politically active throughout his life.

In the 2010s he joined protests against austerity, calling for reparations from Germany for the wartime occupation. He also spoke out against the deal ending the 27-year dispute over the name of the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, now Northern Macedonia.

He leaned towards the right at the end of the 1980s and even served as a minister in a right-wing government, but he was always an iconic figure for all Greeks, both leftists and conservatives, Kostas Kallergis says.

HERE WE ARE!

Mit »Here We Are!

- chi me l’ha fatto fare? (ma continua a farlo);

- ritornerò – a reincontrare persone e luoghi conosciuti nel cammino;

- che bello! – trovare il bello nelle cose che si fanno;

The story of Samaritaine is a grand love story: the love of family, the love of commerce, the love of art, the love for others. Samaritaine is a name that conjures dreams, and, for many Parisians, brings back a flood of memories, such as climbing the grand staircase with one’s grandmother, or just gazing awestruck at the sight of its majestic building in the heart of Paris. From Art Nouveau to Zola, the story of the Samaritaine department store unfolds here in the form of a playful ABC to commemorate its renovation and renaissance in the twenty-first century. This architectural gem once again offers an authentically French shopping experience, blending the chic of avenue Montaigne with the trendy vibe of the Marais. French art de vivre is elevated here, beyond simply a retail space, offering new experiences, an array of restaurants, conferences and exhibitions, a spa and even a five-star hotel. Illustrated with striking photographs, Samaritaine Paris Pont-Neuf juxtaposes French artisanal savoir faire and fashion with elements of Parisian history and anecdotes of the store’s founders, illuminating the evolution of this iconic department store in the heart of the City of Light. As rich and glamorous as the Samaritaine facade on the Parisian skyline, this volume celebrates the revival of this jewel box of French style and spirit.
