About The British Isles 2007 – 2020

So, The British Isles, 2007 – 2020 contains a number of portraits and landscapes taken over thirteen years. Hawkesworth didn’t have an agenda other than wondering from place to place. Thus, he recorded his roaming as he travelled around town centres, residential suburbs, isolated villages and remote islands.

The book is beautifully presented as a celebration of the United Kingdom and its inhabitants. Through Hawkesworth’s lens we see commuting professionals, children, priests, shop workers, market shoppers and all the diverse faces that make up the British population.

Though the exploration of people and places, the photographer achieves an understanding of a very eventful period in British history, full of conflict, deep political shifts and the reframing of ‘Britishness’ as an identity.

About Jamie Hawkesworth

Jamie Hawkesworth is a British fashion and documentary photographer, originally from Suffolk, England. Hawkesworth’s first photography project was made in Preston bus station as a member of the collective Preston is My Paris. The work was published in their 2010 self-published newspaper as well as in his own 2017 book, both called Preston Bus Station. That experience has influenced his work since, shooting fashion campaigns, catalogues and editorials.

He has had solo exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield in Wakefield, UK; Red Hook Labs in Brooklyn, New York City; and Huis Marseille in Amsterdam; the latter showing a mix of his personal as well as his commercial photography.
