MAURIZIO & DANIELE POLLINI PLAY SCHUBERT: THEIR LAST CD

 This album presents the final recordings made by Maurizio Pollini before his death in March 2024 at the age of 82.

Maurizio Pollini passed on his deep love for the music of Schubert to his son and fellow pianist Daniele Pollini. A few years ago they began working together on a joint Schubert project and, in June 2022, recorded a carefully chosen programme at the Herkulessaal in Munich. Sadly, Maurizio Pollini died in March 2024, aged 82. This, his last recording, serves as a fine memorial to a groundbreaking musician who was an exclusive artist with Deutsche Grammophon for over five decades.

On the album, Pollini senior performs the Piano Sonata in G major, D 894, Daniele Pollini plays the Moments musicaux, D 780, and they join forces for the Fantasia in F minor for four hands, D 940. Maurizio Pollini · Daniele Pollini – Schubert comes out digitally and on CD on 25 October 2024, with an accompanying booklet featuring a note on the repertoire by Paolo Petazzi. The first movement of the Fantasia is available to stream/download now, and the third movement of the Sonata will be released on 4 October.

Planning this project was a labour of love for both men. “My father’s interest in Schubert extended beyond his exceptional output for solo piano,” says Daniele Pollini. “As well as performing Winterreise with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, he also programmed several of his other vocal or choral works in the concert series he organised. As for me, I think Schubert was simply one of the most extraordinary composers who ever lived.”

“Having recorded Debussy’s En blanc et noir [for two pianos] together in 2016, I thought it would be nice to make an album of four-hands pieces by Schubert. In the end, we chose the Sonata in G major, Moments musicaux and Fantasia in order to showcase the extraordinary variety of Schubert’s expressive world through three key areas of his piano music: the sonatas, the sets of short pieces, and the works for four hands.”

The Piano Sonata in G major, D 894, is a work of enormous poetic intensity, especially in the hands of Maurizio Pollini. Written in the autumn of 1826, it anticipates the final three sonatas Schubert wrote just before his death in 1828, and is their equal in terms of scale and expressiveness. Schumann called it Schubert’s “most perfect sonata in form and spirit”. Recalling their own conversations about the work, Daniele remembers his father’s appreciation of, among other aspects, “the exceptional contrasts in the opening movement, which is built on such lyricism and poetry, particularly the highly dramatic moments in the development section and the use of extreme dynamics such as fff and ppp.”

The six works that make up the Moments musicaux, D 780, were probably written between 1823 and 1828, but the set is intended to be performed in full. “What’s most fascinating about the Moments musicaux,” explains Daniele Pollini, “is the emotional journey that unfolds as you listen to the six performed as a cycle, with the final piece bringing it to a conclusion in such a melancholy atmosphere.” He plays this characterful and inventive set of works with a sensitivity that brings out every subtle shift in mood, dynamic and tempo.

Paolo Petazzi calls the Fantasia in F minor, dating from early 1828, “the crowning glory of Schubert’s extensive output for piano four hands”. Daniele Pollini agrees, observing that the writing creates “complex and very sophisticated polyphonic and timbral combinations impossible for just two hands to play, resulting in a kind of hugely original ‘enhanced’ piano”. That requires the two pianists to work “in perfect symbiosis” – even though this was the first time he and his father had seriously worked on a four-hands piece together, they achieved that feat in considerable style.

This album looks both to the past, reminding us of the peerless legacy of Maurizio Pollini, and to the future, offering an insight into the wholly individual artistry of Daniele Pollini. It also captures a unique shared moment. “What was always going to be a very special occasion became something we’ll never be able to repeat,” says Daniele. “I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to make this album devoted to Schubert, and to have played alongside my father on his final recording.”

partner organizzativo del progetto, ci invitano a rivivere l’emozione di Romagna in fiore, la rassegna di otto eventi gratuiti che lo scorso maggio,
nel segno del green, ha visitato alcuni dei territori più duramente colpiti dell’alluvione nel 2023.

Alle 21 al Teatro Alighieri di Ravenna, 
il docufilm di Dario Tognocchi e Gerardo Lamattina dedicato a Romagna in fiore sarà proiettato in presenza dei tanti amici che hanno reso possibile quegli straordinari appuntamenti da Faenza a Riolo Terme, da Brisighella e Modigliana a Tredozio, Galeata, Conselice, Sarsina fino alla località La Torraccia della cooperativa C.A.B. TER.RA. In circa 45 minuti, il docufilm raccoglie testimonianze di artisti, staff, volontari, spettatori in un racconto collettivo dove la memoria del dramma si intreccia all’amore per questa terra e le sue genti; una riflessione a più voci sulla possibilità di trovare un nuovo equilibrio fra uomo e natura, anche nello spettacolo dal vivo.

SkyShowtime ha revelado el tráiler oficial de la segunda temporada de “Frasier”, la nueva comedia de CBS Studios nominada a los Emmy® y protagonizada por Kelsey Grammer. La serie se estrenará el 23 de septiembre con dos episodios, y un nuevo episodio cada semana.

La segunda temporada de Frasier verá al Dr. Frasier Crane volver a sus inicios en la cadena de radio KACL de Seattle en uno de sus episodios. Éste contará con estrellas invitadas que retomarán sus papeles de la serie original, incluyendo a Dan Butler como Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe, Edward Hibbert como Gil Chesterton y Harriet Sansom Harris como la encantadora y diabólica agente de Frasier, Bebe Glazer.

Frasier se graba en directo con público en los estudios de Paramount en Los Ángeles. La serie sigue a Frasier Crane (Grammer) en el siguiente capítulo de su vida, cuando regresa a Boston con nuevos desafíos a los que enfrentarse, nuevas relaciones que forjar y, con suerte, algún que otro sueño por cumplir.

Peri Gilpin regresa en esta segunda temporada como estrella invitada recurrente para volver a interpretar el querido papel de Roz Doyle. JUAN DIEGO FLÓREZ FOUNDS HIS OWN LABEL WITH ZARZUELA



Release of first album is planned for autumn 2024

The multi award winning Peruvian-Austrian tenor Juan Diego Flórez is firmly established at the top of his field. He has now founded his own label under the name Florez Records. The first album will be released in autumn 2024 and is dedicated to the zarzuela genre.

 It will also mark the star tenor's first recording with Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra and Choir, an organisation that forms part of the social project he founded and supports, Sinfonía por el Perú. 

This first recording is led by conductor Guillermo García Calvo, who looks back on a long international career and has been Music Director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela between 2020 and 2024.

A tour of major European arts centres featuring with selected romances and orchestral pieces accompanies the release. Stops include Teatro Real, Madrid (19 September), Palau de la Música Catalana, Barcelona (21 September), Vienna Konzerthaus (24 September), Victoria Hall, Geneva (27 September) and Philharmonie de Paris (30 September).

Juan Diego Flórez has made a name for himself as bel canto specialist in particular. By turning to “zarzuela”, he returns to the genre with which he opened up the world of opera as a young singer and composer of popular songs. “These romances full of passion and emotion represent an almost unique opportunity for Spanish and Latin American tenors to sing in their mother tongue” he says, describing his close connection to this Spanish form of opéra comique or operetta which is very well-known and popular in the Hispanic world but less represented in other countries.


By founding his own label, Juan Diego Flórez pursues the goal of documenting his artistic visions in a self-determined way. The next recording plans include both solo albums as well as complete operas. Having his own label also gives him the opportunity to support projects with Sinfonía por el Perú as well as promote young artists.

EXPOSICIÓN VISTIENDO UN JARDÍN. MUSEO DEL TRAJE. FONDAZIONE ZEFFIRELLI: LE TURANDOT DI PUCCINI E BUSONI

La representación de la naturaleza y, más concretamente, la representación de los motivos florales, probablemente sea, junto con la autorrepresentación, uno de los primeros temas trazados por la mano humana, constituyendo desde entonces una referencia constante en todas las manifestaciones culturales.

 

El binomio entre naturaleza y moda ha sido -y sigue siendo- especialmente próspero y bien avenido: cubrir el cuerpo y la casa de flores se ha considerado, en numerosos contextos, una buena forma de mantener el arraigo con el campo, pero hubo una época en la que la indumentaria y los textiles florecieron de una manera extraordinaria.

La exposición Vistiendo un jardín aborda la evolución de los motivos florales que surgieron entre el Barroco y la Ilustración en el campo textil a través de las colecciones del Museo del Traje. Y explora cómo estas representaciones se convierten en reflejo de los profundos cambios que se estaban produciendo en este periodo, en las relaciones del ser humano con el mundo natural, así como la efervescencia de nuevas ideas artísticas, científicas y filosóficas.


 Asimismo, se entrecruzan las influencias de los intercambios comerciales y los avances tecnológicos, gracias a los cuales las representaciones florales mutaron con gran rapidez, convirtiéndose en un testigo clave de la evolución del gusto durante el siglo XVIII y principios del XIX.


La muestra refleja la evolución de la moda de los siglos XVIII y XIX a través del leitmotiv de las flores, así como reivindicar el estudio de los procesos creativos y técnicos como una parte fundamental en la comprensión del fenómeno de la moda y plantear la transversalidad de ésta y su continuo diálogo con distintos campos culturales.


La exposición incluye en torno a ciento veinte piezas, constituyendo su núcleo las colecciones de indumentaria y textiles históricos del siglo XVIII y parte del siglo XIX del Museo del Traje, acompañados de fondos documentales y bibliográficos, pintura, cerámica y artes decorativas, de instituciones como el Museo Nacional del Prado, el Museo Arqueológico Nacional, el Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas o el Real Jardín Botánico.

DOMUS ROMANA. VIDA DOMÉSTICA EN AUGUSTA EMERITA. MUSEO N. ROMANO DE MÉRIDA. NATIONAL GALLERY, VAN GOGH EXHIBITION

El museo nacional de arte romano de Mérida y el Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida unen un año más sus proyectos y esfuerzos en esta nueva exposición temporal dedicada a la domus romana.

El hogar en la sociedad romana se define bajo el término Domus, que era algo más que la vivienda donde se convivía. La domus era un concepto jurídico, que estaba regulado por el derecho romano. Podía ser urbana o suburbana, si estaba dentro o fuera del perímetro amurallado de la ciudad.

En esta exposición se han reunido casi un centenar de piezas muy significativas del mundo doméstico, desde vasos griegos del Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid, muestra de las actividades sociales desarrolladas en el oikos o entorno familiar, hasta objetos decorados con pinturas de celebraciones y banquetes, ofrendas de novia y cerámicas de lujo, mobiliario de la casa, vajillas de bronce, así como adornos y elementos propios del ajuar femenino.

Te invitamos a acercarte a conocer estos espacios asociados al individuo, su origen y su familia, en el que desarrollaba sus más importantes actividades a lo largo de su vida. Donde se nacía y donde se podía morir, el seno vital acogedor de cualquier romano.

Ce chef-d'œuvre de Puccini est ici mis en scène par Robert Wilson avec une profondeur implacable pour nous conter la tragique histoire de Cio-Cio-San, cette jeune geisha abandonnée par un officier de marine américain.

Une tragédie éternelle
L'Opéra Bastille accueille cette saison Madame Butterfly, l'œuvre poignante de Giacomo Puccini. Créée en 1904, cette tragédie japonaise en trois actes raconte l'histoire déchirante de Cio-Cio-San, une jeune geisha de quinze ans, abandonnée par son mari américain, le lieutenant Pinkerton. L'opéra, réputé pour sa partition luxuriante et son lyrisme ardent, explore les thèmes universels de l'amour, de la trahison et du désespoir.


Cette production, dirigée par Robert Wilson, est un revival de la mise en scène originale de 1993, reconnue pour son formalisme stylisé et ses décors minimalistes. Wilson utilise des jeux de lumière sophistiqués pour créer une atmosphère éthérée, permettant aux lignes mélodiques de Puccini de s'épanouir dans toute leur pureté. La collaboration artistique comprend des talents tels que Frida Parmeggiani pour les costumes et Heinrich Brunke pour la lumière, avec Speranza Scappucci à la direction musicale.
La distribution de cette saison est particulièrement remarquable. Cio-Cio-San est interprétée par deux sopranos de renommée mondiale : Eleonora Buratto (du 14 septembre au 6 octobre) et Elena Stikhina (du 10 au 25 octobre). Le rôle de B.F. Pinkerton est confié à Stefan Pop, tandis que Christopher Maltman incarne Sharpless. Aude Extrémo apporte sa profondeur au personnage de Suzuki, la fidèle servante de Cio-Cio-San.

Crimes and Science Across 150 Years of History On View June 28

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will open “Forensic Science on Trial” June 28, a new exhibition that explores the way people influence the development, presentation and interpretation of forensic science. The one-year exhibition will run through June 2025 in the museum’s 1,000-square-foot Albert H. Small Documents Gallery.


Objects and archival documents on view will span 150 years of historic cases and include about a dozen different forensic techniques, from hair to handwriting analysis. Among the objects on view will be arsenic tests from the 1872 trial of Lydia Sherman, who was suspected of poisoning three of her husbands and eight children; one of the earliest polygraphs used for lie detection created by John A. Larson in 1921; an early sexual-assault examination kit co-developed by Martha Goddard and Louis Vitullo; and materials related to fingerprinting and DNA identification on loan from the FBI.

 In addition to the courtroom, the exhibition will look at how the media, through news coverage and on fictional television shows, such as Showtime’s Dexter, shape how the public understands forensic evidence and what is called the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation effect.

“The nation’s popular culture, from streaming series to podcasts, reflects the current fascination with true crime and forensic evidence,” said Anthea M. Hartig, the museum’s Elizabeth MacMillan director. “‘Forensic Science on Trial’ mines the museum’s extensive science collections as well as special loans to provide our audiences with a fascinating look at how forensic science has long been a part of the pursuit of justice.”

Divided into three sections, “Of People,” “By People” and “For People,” the exhibition underscores the long-standing desire to create systems that can reliably turn trace evidence of criminals into convictions, how the collection and judgement of data can be influenced by personal beliefs and the way the past can shape how data is exhibited for those tasked with deciding guilt or innocence.

The exhibition presents objects in pairings under common themes such as privacy, regulation, uncertainty and acceptance. One pairing juxtaposes an object from the early years of bitemark analysis—namely a photograph of a wax bite impression of Ted Bundy’s teeth used in his 1979 murder trial—with a bite apparatus used by researchers at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine between 2009–13, whose results raised questions about some of the fundamental tenets of this practice.

Loans from individuals as well as the Massachusetts and New Jersey State Police Departments allow for the presentation of materials from multiple “trials of the century.” These include a bullet and pistol from the 1921 trial of Italian immigrants and anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti for killing two people during a robbery, a handwriting analysis display from the 1935 trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, charged with the kidnapping and murder of the son of aviators Anne and Charles Lindbergh and a copy of DNA autoradiographs from the 1994–95 trial of O.J. Simpson. 

Among the lenders to the exhibition are DNA expert Dr. Robin Cotton, the Innocence Project, forensic dentist Dr. Richard Souviron, the FBI, the Harvard Law Library and Smithsonian Libraries and Archives.

“This history exhibition focuses on forensic science as a human pursuit, created so that visitors, be they scientists, crime show fans, legal experts or potential jurors, can see themselves as people who shape this work,” said Kristen Frederick-Frost, exhibition curator.

As this exhibition will display objects and present cases related to forensic investigations of murder, sexual assault and kidnapping, it may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

Through incomparable collections, rigorous research and dynamic public outreach, the National Museum of American History seeks to empower people to create a more just and compassionate future by examining, preserving and sharing the complexity of our past.
