Vincent Cassel stars as the man who reportedly inspired Victor Hugo's character in Quasimodo, the Soul of Paris, a historical film by Jean-François Richet, available on Netflix on November 27, 2026.
Vincent Cassel lends his features to the man said to have inspired one of Victor Hugo's most famous characters in Quasimodo, l’âme de Paris. Directed by Jean-François Richet, this French historical drama will hit Netflix on Netflix on November 27, 2026.
The story unfolds in Paris on the eve of the July Revolution. As public anger sweeps the streets and a cholera outbreak threatens the city, Quasimodo finds himself caught between political upheaval and an impossible love.
The film doesn’t directly retell Notre-Dame de Paris. Instead, it imagines the life of the man who inspired Victor Hugo’s famous bell ringer, before the novel appeared in 1831. This angle lets the story pit the character against 19th-century Parisian society, with its inequalities and the violence faced by those deemed “different.”
Who would
be cast in Quasimodo, the Soul of Paris?
Anchored by Vincent Cassel, the cast also features Karim Leklou, Daphné Patakia, Benjamin Voisin, Noémie Lvovsky, Sébastien Pouderoux, Eli Nachmani and Alexis Rosenstiehl.
The roles of most of these actors have not yet been officially disclosed by Netflix. The platform, however, describes the film as a historical drama that blends a chase, unrequited love, and political unrest in a Paris beset by a spreading disease.
Quasimodo,
the Soul of Paris marks another reunion for Vincent Cassel and Jean-François
Richet. The director had already worked with the actor on the Mesrine duology,
and later on The Emperor of Paris, another historical epic centered on a
peripheral figure of the capital.
The screenplay is by Éric Besnard and Edgar Marie. Production is handled by Radar Films. The project sits among Netflix’s major French productions in development for 2026.
First
poster unveiled ahead of the trailer
Netflix
unveiled its first poster, showing Quasimodo bent at the foot of Notre-Dame’s
towers, with the line “From the top of the towers, the people can be heard
rumbling.” The image underscores the central role the Parisian revolt is poised
to play in the narrative.
No official
trailer has dropped yet. The first moving images will need to reveal, among
other things, Vincent Cassel’s physical transformation, the nature of the
impossible love at the story’s center, and how the film recreates 19th‑century Paris.
