The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras (MCO) today announces that the internationally celebrated Baroque conductor Christophe Rousset will make his MCO conducting debut this December with concerts at La Scala, Milan and the ensembles’ home at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London.
The MCO will perform Baroque Christmas music by Bach and Charpentier, including the Messe de Minuit with its beguiling blend of sacred music and French folk carols.
The Choir will also be joined by four outstanding rising-star soloists: Hilary Cronin, Bethany Horak- Hallett, Florian Sievers and Florian Störtz.
The MCO’s creative partnership with Christophe Rousset will also feature a performance at La Scala, Milan - with more dates to be announced next week, when the MCO unveils its full autumn season
Christophe Rousset is inspired by a passion for the rediscovery of the European musical heritage, celebrating the richness and diversity of the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic repertoires, championing overlooked composers from Cavalli to Salieri and Cherubini alongside the complete operatic works of Lully, in award-winning performances and recordings.
Founder and conductor of the ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, Rousset also pursues an active career as a harpsichordist, with his recordings of J. S. Bach regarded as reference releases.
Commenting on the forthcoming tour, Christophe Rousset comments: “I felt very honoured to receive the invitation to conduct a Christmas programme with the MCO. From an early age, I have been a great fan of this ensemble and its founder. Having the chance to work with this wonderful “instrument" at my fingertips is a great privilege.”
Christophe Rousset’s arrival has been warmly received by members of The Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras. Choir Member Sam Evans comments: “For sixty years, The Monteverdi Choir has aimed to set the gold standard for choral music internationally and our latest concerts over the summer were so well received.
I’m very proud to have sung in the choir for the last 23 years and we are really excited that this December the Monteverdi Choir will collaborate with Christophe Rousset. It is going to be a thrill for the Monteverdi Choir to bring Christophe’s vision for these Christmas masterpieces to life in what is a new chapter for us going forward.”
Dr Rosa Solinas, General Director at the MCO comments: “We are very excited Christophe will be joining us for our Baroque Christmas tour, a musician and conductor of exceptional pedigree and creative flair.
We look forward to announcing our autumn season next week which will build on our critically-acclaimed performances earlier this year: Dinis Sousa for our Beethoven Symphonies in London and Paris, Peter Whelan for Handel’s Israel in Egypt and Jonathan Sells with our performances of the Bach Motets.”
