Fresh Movement brings the best of contemporary storytelling to our stage in a reawakening of Māori and Pacifica stories. MĀUI is a vibrant retelling of the many tales of Pacific demi-god Māui that have travelled throughout the area for hundreds of years.

A ground-breaking display of all art forms

In a beautifully rich and contemporary form of story-telling, MĀUI showcases contemporary and traditional Pacific dance forms alongside elements of theatre, spoken word, live music, hip-hop, haka and capoeira, with stunning animated projections.

Choreographed by Hadleigh Pouesi and Christopher Ofanoa, MĀUI features an epic cast of 30 performers of the Freshmans Dance Crew with the four founding members. Synonymous with making waves in the street dance scene in New Zealand, Freshmans Dance Crew are committed to exploring the stories of ancestors, identities and experiences that have travelled throughout the Pacific for hundreds of years.

The performance explores stories and experiences of Pacific migration, myths and legends that have travelled throughout the Pacific. Demonstrating strength, growth, leadership and vulnerability, this joyful, yet at times heart wrenching performance, unfolds over seven chapters each diving deep into all the tales and adventures of Māui.

An epic journey through Polynesian myth and legend, MĀUI is an unmissable opportunity to see the dance traditions of multiple Pacific Island nations all together on the Sydney Opera House stage.

Le brasier épique d’une passion interdite Le chef-d'œuvre de Richard Wagner ouvre la saison 24-25 au Grand Théâtre du 15 au 27 septembre 2024. Le Grand Théâtre de Genève explore les profondeurs de la condition humaine à travers les Sacrifices et ouvre le bal avec l’une des plus grandes histoires d’amour, un monument incontournable de l’œuvre de Richard Wagner : Tristan & Isolde. À propos de l'opéra : La genèse de Tristan se confond avec la vie sentimentale de son compositeur. D’abord épris d’amour pour la belle Mathilde, épouse de son mécène Otto Wesendonck, il succombera aux charmes de sa future femme Cosima, alors mariée au chef Hans von Bülow à qui il a confié la création de Tristan. De cet idylle défendu naîtra, peu de temps avant la première, une petite fille prénommée Isolde. De ses amours interdites, Wagner en extrait l’essence-même de la souffrance, qu’il distille dans une partition à l’intensité captivante. Les leitmotivs portent à l’incandescence la passion entre Tristan et Isolde, usant du chromatisme irrésolu comme d’un philtre de désir inassouvi. Cette « mélodie infinie », qui se répand de la voix à l’orchestre, mène de façon quasi hypnotique l’œuvre jusqu’à son paroxysme final : le Liebestod d’Isolde, l’ultime sacrifice d’amour. Après Parsifal en 22-23, Michael Thalheimer trouve dans Tristan & Isolde un matériau de choix pour son esthétique minimaliste et son amour des contrastes. Le metteur en scène, qui excelle dans l’art de faire émerger la profonde humanité des personnages, exalte la quête des amants maudits dans des jeux d’ombres et de lumières. Pour relever ce défi lyrique, Gwyn Hughes Jones et Elisabet Strid incarnent Tristan et Isolde en compagnie de Kristina Stanek et de Tareq Nazmi. À la tête de l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Marc Albrecht guide cette production à l’impérieuse clarté.
