and McGregor), Trespass (Marriott
and Wheeldon) and Diana and Actaeon (Scarlett,
Tuckett and Watkins)
Background
Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 is a highlight
of the London 2012 Festival. It is a special collaboration between the Royal
Opera House and the National Gallery, London, and features some of the finest
names in contemporary choreography, art, poetry and music. The creative
stimulus for this programme is three masterpieces by the Renaissance artist
Titian, which are being displayed together in the National Gallery this summer: Diana and Actaeon, The Death of Actaeon and Diana and Callisto. They depict powerful stories of
change, inspired by Ovid’s poem Metamorphoses.
The project brings together some of the most exciting names in
contemporary choreography – Alastair Marriott, Christopher Wheeldon, Kim
Brandstrup, Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett, Will Tuckett and Jonathan Watkins –
working alongside leading visual artists – Mark Wallinger, Conrad Shawcross and
Chris Ofili – to create distinctive new works. Major composers Mark-Anthony
Turnage, Nico Muhly and Jonathan Dove have created the scores.Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 showcases the dynamic talents of The
Royal Ballet and provides a fitting, celebratory final programme for its
retiring director, Monica Mason.
Fourteen leading poets, including Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy and Simon
Armitage, have contributed their own unique responses to Titian’s paintings;
their specially commissioned poems are collected in an accompanying
publication, Metamorphosis: Poems Inspired by Titian.
