The Costume Institute’s next major exhibition is a two-part exploration of fashion in the United States. Part one in the Anna Wintour Costume Center will establish a modern vocabulary of American style emphasizing the expressive qualities of dress and deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Inspired by a patchwork quilt, the design of
the galleries will feature approximately 100 individual ensembles encased and
arranged as “squares” in horizontal and vertical rows representing the
qualities that collectively define American fashion. Designs by pioneers
of American style and works by a diverse group of contemporary designers will
illustrate the shifting vernacular of American fashion defined by feelings of
belonging, comfort, delight, exuberance, fear, sentimentality, and well-being,
among other qualities.
Part two, In America: An Anthology of Fashion—opening in the
American Wing period rooms on May 5, 2022—will present narratives that explore
the development of fashion in the United States as they relate to the complex
and layered histories of those spaces. Parts one and two will close on
September 5, 2022.
