Daniel Craig shares why he nearly didn’t do the upcoming Bond movie

As Daniel Craig’s time as James Bond comes to an end, he has
revealed his reasons for nearly not doing No Time To Die. The 25th Bond movie
may have been pushed back to November due to coronavirus fears, but it’s all
over for Craig already. Having recently finished filming, Craig has accepted
that he’s now played the secret agent for the very last time, but it very
nearly didn’t happen. Originally, Spectre, which came out in 2015, was going to
be Craig’s last Bond film because when he was asked to do another, he said he
felt very ‘physically low’.
Addressing the five-year gap between the films, Craig said: ‘I was
never going to do one again. I was like, “Is this work really genuinely worth
this, to go through this, this whole thing?” ‘And I didn’t feel… I felt
physically really low. So the prospect of doing another movie was just, like,
off the cards. And that’s why it has been five years.’ Now, in an interview
with GQ, Craig feels glad that No Time To Die is truly his final 007 movie.
He admitted he doesn’t think he would have been ok if he’d stopped
with the last one, but now he’s ‘fine’ and feels happy to be getting on with
things. Craig has had more freedom and input with No Time To Die than any other
of his Bond films, perhaps as he knew it was his last. He admitted that he
‘kept his mouth shut’ before but regretted it and so decided to get much more
involved with the script this time.
Speaking on his involvement, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who helped to
direct No Time To Die, shared how passionate Craig really is about playing this
role. She described how Craig strives for integrity of character with Bond at
every possible moment. Craig himself shares how he tried to bring out the
persona of Bond from the original Ian Fleming books: ‘He is really f*****g
dark…I think it’s more interesting. And I wanted to inform the part and say that’s
what he is. He’s kind of a f***-up. Because this job would f*** you up.’ After
his wife Rachel Weisz gave birth to their baby daughter in 2018, a bright
future is ahead for Craig.

He says he doesn’t really know what lies in
store: ‘I don’t know what it is, maybe having another kid, maybe just being
older. But all of these things, I was just like, you know, f*** it. There are
other things that are more important.’
