EXHIBITION RENAU IN EXILE.IVAM. ELS EXILIS DE RENAU.

 This exhibition attempts to reconstruct the various historical and creative contexts to which the poster designer, photomontage artist, muralist and writer Josep Renau was forced to adapt in the course of his fascinating life. The show principally investigates two of the least known historical periods within his artistic production, his periods of exile in Mexico and in Communist Berlin.

During his long exile, first in Mexico (1939-1958) and then in East Germany (1958-1982), his work as a poster artist, muralist and illustrator continued to earn him a great reputation, especially in the political and intellectual circles that promoted the idea of art as an instrument at the service of the social revolution.

Since the beginnings of the IVAM, Josep Renau has held a special significance for the institution not only because of his importance as a pioneer of the historic avant-garde movements in Valencia during the Second Republic, but also because in 1989 the IVAM received an extraordinary long-term loan of his works and other items from his personal archive and library. This collection has subsequently been enriched with two further contributions made by the artist’s Foundation in 1991 and 1994.

ELS EXILIIS DE RENAU

Aquesta exposició tracta de reconstruir els diversos contextos històrics i creatius als quals va haver d’adaptar–se el cartellista, fotomuntador, muralista i escriptor Josep Renau durant el seu fascinant trajecte vital. La mostra pren com a objecte principal d’investigació dos dels períodes històrics menys coneguts dins de la seua producció artística: el Mèxic de l’exili i el Berlín comunista.

Durant el seu llarg exili, primer a Mèxic (1939 – 1958) i després a Alemanya Oriental (1958 – 1982), la seua obra com a cartellista, muralista i il·lustrador va continuar gaudint d’una gran reputació, sobretot en els cercles polítics i intel·lectuals que promovien la idea de l’art com a instrument al servei de la revolució social.

Josep Renau ha tingut des dels inicis de l’IVAM una significació especial, no sols per la seua transcendència com a pioner de les avantguardes històriques a València durant la II República, sinó perquè l’IVAM va ser objecte, l’any 1989, d’un extraordinari depòsit dels seus treballs i del seu arxiu i biblioteca personal. Aquest fons s’ha enriquit posteriorment amb altres dues aportacions realitzades per la Fundació de l’artista en 1991 i 1994.
