About The Author

Roland Beaufre is a French interiors photographer who regularly contributes to The World of Interiors, Vogue, and many other publications. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has published several books on great houses and interiors. Philosopher Roberto Peregalli and architect Laura Sartori Rimini founded Studio Peregalli, an interiors and architecture firm, in Milan in the early 1990s. Rupert Thomas was the editor in chief of The World of Interiors for twenty-two years.

EXPOSITION EN COURS

LE MAROC DE THÉOPHILE-JEAN DELAYE (1896-1970)

DU 17 SEPTEMBRE 2022 AU 15 JANVIER 2023

Le Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech consacre une exposition  à Théophile-Jean Delaye, cartographe et illustrateur du Maroc, du samedi 17 septembre 2022 au dimanche 15 janvier 2023.

Cette exposition s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une convention de partenariat, signée en juin 2020, par le Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (Mucem) àMarseille et la Fondation Jardin Majorelle àMarrakech.

Conçue avec le partenariat exceptionnel du Mucem, cette exposition retrace le parcours de Théophile-Jean Delaye au Maroc grâce à une sélection de 120 oeuvres, dont une partie significative provient du Mucem. 

Le musée national, basé à Marseille, a fait l’acquisition de ces oeuvres auprès des descendants de l’artiste en avril 2019.

L’exposition bénéficie également des généreux prêts de la famille de l’artiste. Théophile-Jean Delaye fut le premier cartographe scientifique des reliefs montagneux du sud du Maroc, notamment du Toubkal, dans les années 1930. Son oeuvre picturale considérable est autant portée par un regard scientifique qu’artistique.

Né dans le Dauphiné, au pied des Alpes françaises, Théophile-Jean Delaye a ressenti très tôt l’attirance de la haute montagne. 

Tous ses livres et tous les articles qu’il a publiés dans la Revue de géographie du Maroc entre 1930 et 1940 montrent bien que ce n’est pas seulement en cartographe qu’il s’intéresse à la montagne, mais aussi en alpiniste, voire « en rochassier » comme il le dit lui-même.

Cette montagne marocaine lui est si chère qu’il a le souci de la préserver en étant à l’origine de la création, dès 1942, du Parc naturel du Toubkal, le premier parc naturel marocain, qui deviendra le Parc national de Toubkal. C’est également lui qui a créé la section marocaine du Club alpin français, qui célèbre ses 80 ans cette année.

Cette approche scientifique de la montagne n’en exclut pas la dimension esthétique qu’il exprime ensuite dans son oeuvre dessinée et peinte.
