Protesters projected
the bloated caricature of President Donald Trump on the Cliffs of Dover, much
to the enjoyment of locals.

Eleven months after
protesters trolled President Donald Trump’s visit to British Parliament with a
colicky, infant caricature of the business tycoon looming overhead, the cartoon
baby has returned to haunt the American commander-in-chief from the White
Cliffs of Dover.
“Trump is coming to
Britain to commemorate the defeat of fascism after D-day while at the very same
time pursuing a dangerous far-right agenda and fanning the flames of hatred,”
Trump Baby’s designer Matt Bonner said in an emailed statement to
Hyperallergic. “We lit up the White Cliffs of Dover this weekend to send a
message to the world: Trump and his politics of hatred and division are not
welcome here.”
The illumination
also coincides with a crowdfunding campaign by the protesters ahead of the baby
blimp being used in another demonstration in London during Trump’s first
official state visit with Queen Elizabeth II, which begins today. The
fundraiser has already surpassed its initial goal of £30,000 (~$37,905.00) and
is now aiming for £50,000 (~$63,175.00). The money raised will go toward
charities that support environmentalism, Muslim communities, and women’s rights,
including Planned Parenthood, United We Dream, and Jawaab.
After successfully
following Trump from London to Scotland last year, the baby balloon traveled
across the pond to the United States where it staked out the president near his
New Jersey golf club.
“Our motivation has
always been to mock Donald Trump because we have seen world leaders try to
negotiate with him and fail,” Bonner told Hyperallergic during an interview
last summer. “Trump does not really respond to the kind of moral outrage that comes
from his policies and behavior, but he does have an ego. So we’ve really
managed to succeed in playing his own game by speaking directly to him in a
language he understands.”
Speaking about the
projection in Dover, Bonner told Hyperallergic via email that locals gave an
overwhelmingly positive response to seeing the blimp baby on the white cliffs,
which is an ecological landmark in Great Britain. The cartoon of Trump Baby
looked exactly like its inflatable counterpart, with the president’s signature sneer,
a large diaper tied together with a clothespin, a tuft of blonde chest hair,
and a phone for excessive tweeting.
Ahead of his visit
to the United Kingdom, London’s mayor Sadiq Khan released a video on social
media publicly denouncing Trump, saying that his values are the “complete
opposite of London’s values and the values in this country.”
“We think diversity
is not a weakness, diversity is a strength, we respect women, and we think they
are equal to men, we think it’s important to safeguard the rights of all of us,
particularly the vulnerable and the marginalized,” Khan said.
The president
responded on Twitter this morning, calling the British official “a stone cold
loser.”
