To visitors at the floating
concert hall on the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge, Mark Peskanov is a
familiar sight. He has steered a steady course as the artistic director of
Bargemusic, balancing adventurous new music and family-friendly classics. But
he is also a violinist of formidable technical and persuasive powers, as his
recital on Saturday, July 29, will attest.
For this program, with
Doris Stevenson at the piano, Mr. Peskanov draws an arc from the crystalline
simplicity of Mozart to Sarasate’s fiery “Carmen Fantasy,” traversing works by
Paganini, Piazzolla, Stravinsky and others that show composers steeped in, or
flirting with, Hispanic musical traditions. (bargemusic.org)
