The museum is under
construction in the Kebon Jeruk district of West Jakarta, and is being heralded
as one of the most exciting new art openings in the world, a chance not only to
showcase Indonesia’s rich yet underrated contemporary artists, but also to put
Jakarta on the map as a cultural destination. Some excited voices are saying it
will be the finest contemporary art museum in the whole of Southeast Asia.
The project is the
brainchild of businessman and art collector Haryanto Adikoesoemo and will be
used to house some of the 800 artworks he has amassed over 25 years. The
collection has a strong focus on Indonesian artists with work by the likes of
Raden Saleh and Affandi, but also includes pieces by a raft of celebrated
international names such as Anish Kapoor, Ai Wei Wei, Jeff Koons, and Gerhard
Richter.
In an interview with the
New York Times last year, Adikoesoemo said he wanted the museum “to develop and
advance the understanding of Indonesians about art and the appreciation of
art,“ adding, “I also want this museum to help cross-pollinate exchanges with
Indonesia and the world, to provide a platform for Indonesian art
internationally and to bring international art to Indonesia.”
