Set to debut as part of Chanel's
Métiers d'art collection at Rome's Cinecittà studios, Karl Lagerfeld's short Once
and Forever has
debuted a trailer; featuring both Kristen Stewart and Geraldine Chaplin in the
role of legendary designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel.
Stewart
and Chaplin will both play actresses tasked with starring in a film about the
designer; capturing the ins-and-outs of costuming fittings, script meetings,
and screen tests.
Lagerfeld's history with Hollywood muses is one both
expansive and richly populated. Geraldine Chaplin, daughter of Charlie Chaplin
and Oona O'Neill, has already featured in the role of Chanel in four of his
previous shorts. The part was also notably played by Keira Knightley
in 2011's Once Upon a Time..., taking
place in the designer's fledgling years as a hat designer. Stewart herself has
now been chosen as the face of the 2015-16 Paris-Rome Métiers d'art
collection, with additional photographs set for release in May 2016.
Stewart's an odd choice for a young Chanel, considering her acting seems so defined by its own modernity and Chanel's legacy is one tied to ideas of timeless elegance. Unfortunately, there's little to judge from the trailer offered; the only significant grasp of dialogue seeing Stewart exhibiting her usual 21st century frustrations as she shouts at her producer. "What movie? We have not made a movie. How about we make a movie before we sell a movie?"
