'Brevity is the soul of wit,' says Polonius in what is, ironically,
Shakespeare's longest play. OPERA2DAY have taken these words to heart. Inspired
by film noir, this excellent young Dutch company have merged opera and film to
create a compact version of Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet that hauntingly penetrates
the Prince of Denmark's mind.
A milestone of grand opéra, Thomas’s masterpiece meets every
expectation of what a Hamlet opera should offer. There’s King Claudius’s
degenerated court in all its pomp and circumstance, the hero's feverish inner
struggle, his father's mysterious appearance as a ghost, and Ophélie's intense
insanity scene, which is one of the most moving ever written. Watch it all and
more tonight on OperaVision.
