The Mariinsky at the Golden Masks
On 25 and 26 January the Mariinsky Theatre will be
appearing at Moscow’s Golden Mask festival.

Last season’s Mariinsky Theatre premieres will be presented
at the Golden Mask
festival. On 25 January the Bolshoi Theatre will see performances
of the ballets Concerto DSCH to music by Dmitry
Shostakovich (choreography by Alexei Ratmansky) –
nominated as “Best Ballet Production” – and Sacre. The new production of Sacre, staged at
the Mariinsky Theatre to mark one century since Stravinsky’s work Le Sacre du printemps
was written, has been nominated as “Best Contemporary Dance Production”
(the Mariinsky Theatre’s first nomination in this category), “Best
Work by a Choreographer” (Sasha Waltz)
and “Best Lighting Designer” (Thilo Reuther).
On 26 January during the traditional festival
programme of Mariinsky
Theatre Premieres Moscow audiences will have the chance
to see Jules Massenet’s opera Don Quichotte, staged by
Yannis Kokkos. Valery Gergiev
will be conducting. The title role will be performed by the renowned
Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto,
an internationally acclaimed interpreter of this role (initially written
by the composer for Fyodor Chaliapin).
The anniversary 20th Golden Mask festival
concludes on 17 April. The prize-winning ceremony will take
place on 18 April at the Bolshoi Theatre. This year,
a record number of nominations also went to the new production
of The Lefthander by Rodion
Shchedrin, specially commissioned for the new Mariinsky
Theatre (Mariinsky II) and dedicated to Valery Gergiev. It features
in the categories “Best Opera Production”, “Best Male Role in Opera”
(Mariinsky Opera Soloist Andrei Popov
for the role of the Lefthander), “Best Work by
a Composer in Musical Theatre” (Rodion Shchedrin), “Best Work by
a Designer in Musical Theatre” (Alexander Orlov)
and “Best Work by a Costume Designer in Musical Theatre” (Irina Cherednikova).
