The Mariinsky at the Golden Masks
On 25 and 26 January the Mariinsky Theatre will be appearing at Moscow’s Golden Mask festival.

Last season’s Mariinsky Theatre premieres will be presented at the Golden Mask festival. On 25 January the Bolshoi Theatre will see performances of the ballets Concerto DSCH to music by Dmitry Shostakovich (choreography by Alexei Ratmansky) – nominated as “Best Ballet Production” – and Sacre. The new production of Sacre, staged at the Mariinsky Theatre to mark one century since Stravinsky’s work Le Sacre du printemps was written, has been nominated as “Best Contemporary Dance Production” (the Mariinsky Theatre’s first nomination in this category), “Best Work by a Choreographer” (Sasha Waltz) and “Best Lighting Designer” (Thilo Reuther).

On 26 January during the traditional festival programme of Mariinsky Theatre Premieres Moscow audiences will have the chance to see Jules Massenet’s opera Don Quichotte, staged by Yannis Kokkos. Valery Gergiev will be conducting. The title role will be performed by the renowned Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, an internationally acclaimed interpreter of this role (initially written by the composer for Fyodor Chaliapin).
The anniversary 20th Golden Mask festival concludes on 17 April. The prize-winning ceremony will take place on 18 April at the Bolshoi Theatre. This year, a record number of nominations also went to the new production of The Lefthander by Rodion Shchedrin, specially commissioned for the new Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) and dedicated to Valery Gergiev. It features in the categories “Best Opera Production”, “Best Male Role in Opera” (Mariinsky Opera Soloist Andrei Popov for the role of the Lefthander), “Best Work by a Composer in Musical Theatre” (Rodion Shchedrin), “Best Work by a Designer in Musical Theatre” (Alexander Orlov) and “Best Work by a Costume Designer in Musical Theatre” (Irina Cherednikova).
