On April 9, 2018, Teresa
Berganza will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the
International Opera Awards 2018.
The organization announced
that Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza will receive the award for her
legendary operatic career. Berganza, who studied music at the Madrid
Conservatory, where she was awarded the first prize for singing in 1954, made
her concert debut in Madrid in 1955, and in 1957 received international acclaim
for her performance of Dorabella in “Così fan tutte” at the Aix-en-Provence
Festival, aged just 22.
She would go onto sing in
every major theater including La Scala, the Royal Opera House, Edinburgh, the
Metropolitan Opera, and the Teatro Real, among others. Among her signature
roles were Rosina in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,”
Cherubino, Dorabella, and Sesto. She also performed zarzuelas of her native
Spain and made multiple recordings.
The opera awards will be
held at the Londo Coliseum on April 9 showcasing the best of opera.
