‘The reason Orfeo or anyone else starts the journey is Love,’ says
the legendary mezzo-soprano Janet Baker. ‘It is the only power that can bring
us safely through.’
With gnashing furies, a chorus of nymphs and songs so sweet as to
melt the heart of Hades, it’s easy to see why, for over four hundred years,
composers have been drawn to the story of Orpheus and his audacious mission to
save his wife from the land of the dead. Of all the operas that have resulted,
Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice is perhaps the most radical. A revolutionary new mix
of text, music and dance, it was the pinnacle of his pursuit for beautiful
simplicity and dramatic truth. Tonight's intimate production is a collaboration
between Irish National Opera and the dance company United Fall - to enjoy on
OperaVision from 19:00 CET.
Orfeo ed Euridice
Gluck
Location: Irish National
Opera Date: 12 April 2019
at 19:00 CET
A grief-stricken musician goes to the underworld in search of his
wife. He is allowed to retrieve her on one condition – that he not look at her
until they are back on earth.
Orfeo ed Euridice features the moving aria ‘Che farò senza
Euridice?’ and the famous Dance of the Blessed Spirits. Praised by German
magazine Der Opernfreund as ‘quite simply sensational’, mezzo-soprano Sharon
Carty delivers a compelling performance in the title role as the legendary
Orfeo. Follow her to hell and back tonight, only on OperaVision.
