Franz Schubert’s death at
31 cut short the life of one of the great talents of the 19th century. Few
experiences bring home that fact as acutely as performances of his Symphony No.
8, nicknamed “Unfinished,” which forms the centerpiece of a three-part concert
series by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra that opens on Friday, Feb. 24. Led
by the conductor Franz Welser-Möst, this stellar ensemble also presents
Schubert’s Overture to “Die Zauberharfe” and his Ninth Symphony alongside
Strauss’s popular tone poem “Ein Heldenleben” and Schoenberg’s luscious
“Verklärte Nacht.” The concert on Friday also features the American premiere of
“Time Recycling” by René Staar, a longtime violinist with this orchestra.
