Conductor Mark Elder talks
about the new performing edition of Donizetti’s opera in this guest insight
from Opera Rara, who are collaborating with The Royal Opera to present L’Ange
de Nisida.
Join conductor Mark Elder
and Italian opera expert Roger Parker for this Opera Rara insight event
exploring how a new performing edition of Donizetti’s opera L’Ange de Nisida
was constructed. They will be joined by singers Anush Hovhannisyan (soprano)
and Nico Darmanin (tenor). L'Ange de Nisida receives its world premiere
performances at the Royal Opera House on Wednesday 18 and Saturday 21 July
2018.
Donizetti planned L’Ange de
Nisida to be one of his first operas written for Paris, but the theatre that was
to stage it went bankrupt before the work could have its premiere. Never one to
waste his compositions, Donizetti incorporated some of the music into his grand
opera, La Favorite. The ground-breaking project to restore the
never-before-heard L’Ange de Nisida is the brainchild of Dr Candida Mantica,
who painstakingly pieced together fragments of the opera that she discovered in
locations worldwide in order for Opera Rara to create this new performing
edition.
