Do we actually want a new wardrobe every six months or can fashion last longer? Does the fit of a dress have to satisfy the prevailing ideal of beauty or might it be different? What is fashion’s role in the advance of wearable technology like Google Glass? These are the fundamental questions that concern the latest generation of fashion designers. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is showing the fashion of the future, with work by designers including Viktor&Rolf, Christophe Coppens (Belgium), Hussein Chalayan (Cyprus) and Rejina Pyo (Korea).
The latest generation of fashion designers takes a
critical view of the current fashion system. They are coming up with innovative
solutions and fresh designs at the cutting edge of fashion and art.
Sustainability, futuristic technologies and the social value of clothes are
themes with which these designers address the fashion of the future. ‘The
Future of Fashion is Now’ - with clothes and accessories, videos and
installations - can be seen this autumn in the museum’s 1,500-square-metre
exhibition space. The exhibition is an initiative of Han Nefkens Fashion on the
Edge.
Fashion of Tomorrow
The exhibition shows work by more than fifty
international designers, from renowned fashion houses to young up-and-coming
talent. The world-famous fashion duo Viktor&Rolf will respond to the
present fashion system with a Zen garden and pleas to move more slowly with
greater spirituality. Designer Wang Lei (China) makes traditional Chinese
costumes from woven toilet tissue and Carole Collet (UK) explores sustainable
materials in her experiments with lace patterns that grow from strawberry
plants. The hand-knitted creations by Pyuupiru (Japan) offer the wearer a new
identity, free from the restricting influence of the human body. Technological
innovations also offer designers new approaches to what ‘fashion’ could be in
the future. Charging a smartphone while travelling is easy with the jacket from
Pauline van Dongen’s ‘Wearable Solar Project’.
Six fashion designers made new work exclusively
for the exhibition, enabled by the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge Award. The
working process of these commissions is on view on the new online platform www.futureoffashion.nl.
Publication, Future of Fashion app
and More
A lavishly illustrated publication is produced to
accompany the exhibition, it is available in the museum shop and webshop.
Furthermore, there is - with thanks to the BankGiro Lotery - a special
iPhone app in which a number of designers will discuss their work. The tour on
the app is also available via tour.boijmans.nl. The
museum is staging a variety of activities including workshops and lectures.
A selection of ARTtube videos relating to this and
other exhibitions is on show in the Video Room. See how Iris van Herpen uses
3D-printing technology in her design process. Studio Wieki Somers provides a
poetic glimpse of everyday life and trend guru Li Edelkoort discusses the role
of textiles in our society. You can find several videos about designers that
are part of the exhibition on ARTtube.
With the exhibition comes a booklet with more
information about the designs and quotes from the designers. You can find this
booklet within the exhibition and you can also download it here.
